There is no longer any evidence
of the church which was built originally under this name. The existing
church was built in the 11th century and was remodeled in the 12th century.
Two hundred years later, it received a further remodeling following
the Latin occupation, which saw the inner narthex rebuilt and the addition
of an outer narthex and paracclesion. In the early 16th century, it
was converted to a mosque, but now serves as a museum. In the church,
there are beautiful mosaics depicting the life of Virgin Mary and Jesus
Christ, as well as many attractive frescoes. In fact, these are the
most well preserved mosaics and frescoes from the Roman era in Turkey.
